Before the advent of colour photography, monochrome photographs could be hand coloured to produce a hybrid picture, half photograph half painting.
Black and white photographs can be tinted in the same way now, to produce coloured prints that have the qualities of both colour prints and monochromes.
Colour originals can also be used after first converting them to black and white images.
Although hand tinting techniques are historically more suited to formal settings as shown here, they can also be applied to much more light hearted images as can be seen in the gallery.
